Accommodations Available in On-Campus Housing
On-campus housing is an optional service available to students at Harrisburg University and is not required for participation in academic programs or educational opportunities. Harrisburg University is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Accommodation requests are reviewed on an individualized basis through the University's ADA accommodation process.
In situations where the University is unable to provide a specific accommodation within its housing inventory or operational capabilities, students may explore off-campus housing options that may better meet their individual needs.
The most common housing-related accommodations include:
- Room Type Requests
- Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Requests
- In-Unit Modifications
Room Type Requests
Harrisburg University maintains a limited number of single-occupancy units within its housing inventory. These units are typically prioritized for students with documented disability-related needs or other special circumstances. Students requesting a single room as a reasonable accommodation must complete the University's ADA accommodation process and provide appropriate documentation supporting the request. Accommodation approvals are based on an individualized review of the student's disability-related needs.
The University also offers a limited number of single-bedroom spaces within shared two-bedroom units. While these room types do not require ADA approval for eligibility, students who have approved disability accommodations may receive priority consideration during the housing assignment process, subject to availability.
Because housing inventory is limited, approved accommodation requests do not guarantee immediate placement in a preferred room type. If no appropriate space is available at the time of application, students will be placed on a waitlist. Housing staff will contact students as units become available and assignments can be made.
In-Unit Modifications
Students may request reasonable in-unit modifications to address disability-related access needs within their assigned housing space. Examples may include accessibility adjustments or modifications that support equal access to housing facilities. Students requesting an in-unit modification should contact Housing@my.harrisburgu.edu to schedule a consultation with Housing staff.
Depending on the nature of the request, students may be required to submit supporting documentation and complete the University's ADA accommodation review process. Certain modifications may be limited by building design, safety requirements, or availability. In some cases, students may be placed on a waitlist until an appropriately modified unit becomes available.
Housing Accommodation Review Process
All housing accommodation requests are evaluated through an individualized and interactive process that considers the student's documented disability-related needs, available housing inventory, and the reasonableness of the requested accommodation. Harrisburg University reserves the right to identify alternative accommodations that effectively address a student's disability-related needs when the requested accommodation is not feasible or available.
For questions regarding housing accommodations, students should contact Student Housing at Housing@my.harrisburgu.edu.
